Focusing on mirco or marco impact?

There are only two levels at which you can have an impact on the world, either the mirco or marco, you can not do everything and trying to do so will probably end up with you doing lots of things badly. You need to decide at what level you want your actions to focus on, then this can act as a guide to what you do and why. This focus intensifies your impact and allows you to let go of trying to do everything, you only have so much energy to live a life in alignment with who you are, it requires a choice where you increase your control in one area by decreasing and letting go of your control in another, it is decision about what you want, whether you wish to focus your time and energy upon the mirco or marco level of life.

How you decide will depend on your personality and how you feel about the world around you, what is important to you, if you are family focused, care about the quality of your relationships, the fine details of your home, how you spend each moment of the day, you are probably interested in the micro impact of your actions. On the other hand if what you care about is the grand project that is going to have a lasting impact on the world, carving your name on history, you are probably too marco to care whether you shower in the morning, though getting a routine is probably a good idea. Most people think they are in-between of the extremes, or at least have the social intelligence that they should care about both sides of the equation of mirco versus marco, but focus gives you clarity to your actions at both ends.

There is not a correct answer to this question neither is more important or a higher purpose, both are necessary and interdependent, the marco is the sum of all the mirco actions, and the mirco is a reflection of the marco influences in our lives. It is not a competition if someone makes a documentary about minilisism it only has a macro impact on the world if people choose at the mirco level to watch and care about it enough to actually change how they live, the maker will never know what impact that they have on the world or even how much was down to them, they might just be a nudge in a wave of minilisism information out there, marco people have to live with this uncertainty. It is at the level of the mirco that all those good ideas compete with each other for the attention of individuals who make the real decisions, who have real conversations with their friends about what is important and what really works, and it is a battleground where the marco people have to rely on the mirco people to win the war, it is the mirco people who get to have concrete result and certainty, and they know if they are winning or losing.

That is why the mirco people are always hunger for ideas, new things to try, they want the weapons to make a better life for everyone around them, they want to grow, learn, be better people so that they can impact others at a personal, caring level and it would be a tragic waste of their talents if they had to come up with the tactics and strategies to use for the good of all humanity, their marco interests should be focused through how to use them at the mirco level as no plan survives contact with the enemy. A book, documentary or idea is never going to compete with the impact that single individuals are going to have on your life, your parents, partner, friends, teachers, the people who operate on the mirco level are the ones who change your life and have the greatest impact on how you live. What the marco people bring to the table is the raw material that lead to better actions, the understanding of how people work gives us tools to help people, but the helping part is what is important, the best idea that does not get used is no use to anyone.

This is not to say we should ignore the other side of life, but it does mean that we focus our actions through the lens of how we want to impact the world. A macro people should shower, care for themselves, excerise, eat well, so that they can have a greater impact on the world by being more effective, a better communicator of the ideas they want to share, and a mirco person should listen and learn from marco ideas so that they can be more effective in their mirco actions. It is by working on our weaknesses that we become more effective overall and often the greatest marginal returns are by reducing our worst aspects, an angry nurse is always going to be worse than a happy one even if they have better technical skills.

Some of the best relationships in business or our personal lives are between people who have a different focus, one looks after the mirco and the other marco, that does not mean that they ignore the other side, just that each has their leadership role and focus. There is no point having the greatest business idea in the world, if the company goes bankrupt due to bad cash flow, management and accounting, you need the two levels to work together with understanding, respect and communication, the left hand needs to know what the right hand is doing whilst not trying to do it's job for them.

Which is why it is so important to know where your focus is, to know what you care about and where you wish to make an impact, we do not get to do everything or we end up doing lots of poor jobs. We have to trade control for focus, by giving a little up we gain the benefits of specialisation, we get to have the impact that we so desire whilst not having our lives fall apart behind our backs, and if you have the relationships in your life that allows you focus on the small details and craft perfect impactful moments treasure them, if you are allow to change the world be grateful that you get to share them with someone who cares for you and your well being. We need each other in everyway that is imaginable, we need the balance that the mirco and marco can produce between them, we need both shoes to walk towards a better future where everyone is valued for their own unique skills and focus, so decide whether you want to make a mirco or marco impact on the world and find your matching shoes.
